Sumac or berry sumac (Rhus coriaria) is a shrub up to 3 meters high with finely lobed leaves, white flower clusters and round rust-colored fruits. The dried fruits, whole or ground into powder, are used as a spice.
Sumac has its origins in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Both the Greeks and Romans used sumac as a medicine and spice. The scientific genus name Rhus goes back to the Greek word rhoos, something that flows, and coriaria goes back to the Latin corium, meaning leather.
