Turkish Delight, or lokum, is a type of confectionery that originated in Turkey.
It consists of small fragrant cubes of jelly, traditionally flavored with rose water, orange blossom water or lemon juice and dusted with icing sugar. Many premium varieties of Turkish Delight consist largely of chopped nuts and dates in the jelly confection.
In C.S. Lewis' classic Narnia novel, Edmund Pevensie enters a closet and suddenly finds himself in a snowy kingdom. An unknown queen, who turns out to be a witch, asks him what he would like to eat most. The answer that pops into his head is Turkish Delight, and soon he has a whole box of Turkish Delight.
The origins of the confection are somewhat unclear, but Turkish Delight is known to have been manufactured in Turkey as early as the late 18th century. Turkish delight was probably invented by palace confectioners in Istanbul although the original exporter, Haci Bekir, claims to have created it.
