White cheese - Traditional Sepet Peyniri - Basket cheese
Sepet peyniri, or basket cheese, is a traditional Turkish cheese originating from the Aegean coast, particularly popular in areas such as Ayvalık and Balıkesir. The cheese gets its name from the unique way it is formed - in braided baskets (sepet) - which gives the surface a characteristic ribbed texture and rustic charm.
Made from cow's milk, or a blend, Sepet peyniri has a mild but distinctive flavor, reminiscent of feta cheese but with a softer, crumbly texture. It is aged in brine, which makes it naturally durable and flavorful, while retaining its soft texture and slightly acidic profile.
Sepet peyniri is perfect for the breakfast table, meze platters, salads, pastries and hot dishes. Try crumbling it over grilled vegetables, baking it into steak, or serving it with olives and tomato.
