Chana Chaat: The Taste of Indian Street Food in Your Kitchen

7/06, 2026 –

Picture the lively, colourful streets of Delhi or Mumbai, where the smell of freshly grilled corn, crisp samosas and spiced tea fills the air. In the middle of all that bustle you will find one of the best-loved street foods of all: Chana Chaat. This fresh, punchy chickpea salad is a riot of textures and flavours – soft, crunchy, sweet, sour, salty and hot, all in one mouthful. It wakes up the senses and tells a story about India's rich food culture.

So how do you recreate all that at home? It is easier than you think. With Shan Chana Chaat spice mix you have the perfect shortcut. This expertly blended mix of cumin, coriander, chilli, black salt and dried mango, among other things, gives your chickpeas exactly the spicy, tangy, moreish character of a real Chana Chaat.

Recipe: authentic Chana Chaat in 15 minutes

This recipe is quick, simple and seriously tasty. Perfect as a filling snack, a light lunch or part of a bigger Indian spread. Let's get started!

Ingredients

  • 1 tin (approx. 400 g) cooked chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 medium potato, boiled and diced
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large tomato, deseeded and finely chopped
  • 1–2 tbsp Shan Chana Chaat spice mix (adjust to taste)
  • 2–3 tbsp tamarind chutney
  • 1 tbsp mint chutney (optional, for extra freshness)
  • A handful of fresh coriander, roughly chopped
  • Juice of half a lemon or lime
  • A handful of "sev" (thin, crispy fried gram-flour noodles) to garnish
  • 1 green chilli, finely chopped (optional, for extra heat)

Method

  • Step 1: Make the base
  • In a large bowl, combine the drained chickpeas, diced boiled potato, chopped red onion and tomato. Mix gently so the potato does not turn to mash.
  • Step 2: Add the magic
  • Now for the most important ingredient. Sprinkle your Shan Chana Chaat spice mix over the chickpea mixture. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more later if you want a bolder flavour.
  • Step 3: Add the chutneys and herbs
  • Drizzle over the tamarind chutney, the mint chutney if using, and the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add the chopped coriander and green chilli (if using). Mix well so every chickpea is coated in all those lovely flavours.
  • Step 4: Garnish and serve
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed – a little more chaat masala, a pinch of salt or an extra squeeze of lemon? Spoon your Chana Chaat into bowls and top generously with crunchy sev just before serving. Serve straight away so the sev stays crisp!
